    Description

    This medal and ribbon are in great shape for being over a century old.  The medal is 1 3/16 inches in diameter.  The front is highly detailed, featuring a female spirit/angel looking over a line of U.S. Doughboys, who are carrying battle flags under a rising sun.
    “They Saved the Republic” in Latin appears at the top.
    At the bottom is the name of the artist/sculptor, “E. Gosselin.”
    On the reverse side is a shield and inside it are three engraved sections: mountains, gears used in industry, and a building and locomotive on the bottom. The shield is surrounded by laurel wreaths.  Above the shield is the message “Work Completed” in Latin.  In the middle of the ribbon is an engraved arm with a hammer.
    Around the edges on the face of the medal is a message from the proud city of Manchester, NH, to “the Defenders of Justice and Liberty” in thanks for the service of local World War I veterans.
    The entire medal captures the optimism of post-World War I America.
